5 Bad Habits That Can Harm Your Teeth

Floss & Gloss Dental

Do you know your teeth are susceptible to damage if they are not looked after properly? Regular cleaning and flossing can prevent serious dental issues from emerging, but resorting to certain harmful habits can damage your teeth. We may not realise but there are several habits that can cause serious harm to your dental health. Let’s take a look at some of the bad dental habits that can harm your teeth:

1.Chewing On Ice

Many of us may not know that chewing ice causes a range of dental issues. Chewing ice damages your tooth enamel. As a result of it, your teeth become vulnerable to acidic reactions and tooth decay. Chewing ice can lead to a cracked or chipped tooth, which calls for an emergency dental visit.

2. Grinding Teeth

You usually grind your teeth when you are in anxiety, stress, while sleeping, or even while reading, without even realizing that you are doing it. If you do not keep a check on this habit, then your teeth enamel will be damaged and your teeth can eventually crack. Excessive teeth grinding is called as bruxism, which requires immediate professional attention.

3. Using Teeth As An Opener

Do not use your teeth as a substitute for pliers or scissors. Using your teeth to open a bottle is one of the bad dental habits you should avoid. The metal or plastic cap of your bottle can crack your teeth and cause oral problems for you.

4. Over-Brushing Your Teeth

Over-brushing your teeth with a toothbrush that is too hard can lead to abrasion. Abrasion is the recession of your gum lines that can eventually lead to gum sensitivity and cavities. So, try to avoid over brushing and use a soft-bristled toothbrush to brush your teeth. You should avoid brushing more than twice a day.

5. Over Consumption Of Soft Drinks

Avoid too much consumption of soft drinks as it contains large concentrations of sugar, phosphoric and citric acids that cause tooth decay. The sugar in soft drinks interacts with bacteria in your mouth to form acid. This acid attacks your tooth enamel, leading to stains, decay, and other oral health issues.

Now that you are aware of these bad dental habits, be alert and correct them before they lead to any problems. At Floss and Gloss Dental we can help you keep a check on these bad habits.
