The primary cause of your bad breath could be improper oral hygiene.
Can bad breath be one of the reason why people shy away from you? Yes, it can. When you are out on a date or at some social gathering, bad breath can be a complete turn off for people around you. The primary cause of your bad breath could be improper oral hygiene. And, if not dealt with, it can lead to severe dental problems like tooth decay and gum disease. While visiting your dentist is prudent if your bad breath persists for a prolonged period, you can also take these measures to enjoy a fresh breath.
1. Brush and Floss Regularly
When you don’t follow a proper oral care routine, food particles can get trapped in between your teeth. The bacteria present in your mouth loves feeding on these food particles and can lead to cavities, resulting in bad breath. Brushing twice and flossing regularly can prevent cavities from occuring. It also cleanses your mouth of smell causing bacteria, thus leaving you with a fresh breath.
2. Use a Mouthwash
In spite of brushing and flossing, your mouth may not be cleaned of the odor causing bacteria. Mouthwash helps getting rid of the bacteria that causes bad breath. Whether after brushing and flossing or after meals, swirl the mouthwash in your mouth for up to 30 seconds or a minute. Doing so regularly can help you get rid of foul breath.
3. Scrape Your Tongue Daily
A healthy tongue is pale pink. You must have noticed a white film that develops on your tongue often. This is the food debris, dead cells, and bacteria accumulated. And, if not scraped off, it can cause bad breath. While many people use their brush, it may not be as effective as a scraper. Get a tongue scraper and develop the habit of cleaning your tongue regularly. You’ll never have to be embarrassed because of bad breath.
4. Eat Healthy
Over consumption of foods like onion and garlic can lead to a strong, smelly breath. Plus, consuming too much of desserts, junk food, coffee, tea, and not maintaining oral hygiene can lead to cavities and, in turn, bad breath. Balance your diet by including healthy fruits and vegetables that offer essential nutrients to boost oral, as well as overall health. You may also consider dairy products that are considered good for your teeth.
5. Quit Tobacco
If you’ve the habit of smoking, you must be tired of hearing – ‘Quit Smoking’. But, let us remind you that it is for your own good. Tobacco chewing or smoking does no good to your oral and overall health. Apart from leaving you with a bad breath, tobacco can also lead to oral cancer. Plus, to cover the breath that it gives, you tend to consumer sugary mints or drinks. This can elevate the oral problems. If you don’t want the embarrassment that comes with bad breath, stained teeth, and other severe dental issues, quit tobacco now!
6. Keep Your Mouth Hydrated
Saliva in your mouth helps wash off food particles. It keeps your mouth hydrated and prevents dental problems from occurring. If your mouth does not make enough saliva, then it causes a dry mouth. This leads to dead cells and bacteria accumulating in your mouth, and results in bad breath. Drinking enough water throughout the day can help you keep your mouth moist and rid you of bad breath.
So, if you have the issue of bad breath, you know what you should be doing now. If the problem still stays, then it is imperative that you consult a dentist.
