4 Signs You Need a Root Canal Treatment

Floss & Gloss Dental

Root canal is a surgical procedure that treats infected teeth. The treatment is often feared because the moment people hear about it they think of the severe pain that they don’t want to go through. But, in reality, root canal can save your natural tooth. A root canal treatment removes the infected nerves, disinfects the area, and seals it with cement to avoid more cavities. Typically, decay is the usual cause of root canals. Here are some signs and reasons you may need a root canal:

1. Tooth decay

As mentioned above, tooth decay is the usual reason for a root canal. Cavities, when left untreated, penetrate deep into your tooth and cause decay. Tooth decay can cause pain that can be mild or severe, depending on the depth of the infection. This is the reason, many people fail to see symptoms before it gets too late. There is a high possibility that you might feel pain while eating, even though the tooth looks healthy. This usually happens when the nerves inside the tooth are infected, but not seen on the outside. If you’ve been suffering severe toothache, then it’s time to consult a dentist.

2. Chipped or Broken Tooth

The moment you realize that you have a chipped or broken tooth, you need to visit your dentist right away. Food particles can get trapped in the cracks. Bacteria present in your mouth can react with it causing decay. The decay, when left unattended to, can damage the pulp of the tooth and call for a root canal.

3. Discolored Tooth

If you look closely to the above image, then you will be able to see the blue and red veins that are present in dental pulp. This pulp contains blood vessels, connective tissues, and nerves. Basically, it is the core of your tooth. If this pulp is damaged and nerves die, then the blood flow will be disturbed and lead to change in color of your tooth. If you see a grey or black tinge on your teeth, then you may need a root canal.

4. Swollen and Tender Gums

Swollen or tender gums around the decayed tooth indicates that the nerves are infected. If you face issues like swollen and tender gums, then it is imperative to visit the dentist. Such gum conditions can also result in gumboils. The swelling of the gums leaves a noticeable lump around your infected tooth.
